Choosing a washbasin for your bathroom

Arranging a functional bathroom takes a lot of time, and every piece of sanitary ware should be thought of carefully. Apart from choosing between a shower enclosure or a bathtub, there are still a few minor decisions to make. The first thing to consider is the size of the bathroom. The washbasin for a small bathroom will need to be small in size; in this case a 40cm washbasin would be a good choice. However, if the bathroom is spacious, we can afford a larger model. Also, let's not forget about the functionality. When deciding on a smaller washbasin, it is better to opt for one that is deeper, which will make it more comfortable to use, and each time you wash your hands, the floor won't get splashed, helping to keep the bathroom clean.

When choosing the washbasin, we need to keep in mind the design and the amount of storage space. In case of small bathrooms, every bit of free space is worth using. Bathroom washbasin with a cabinet is then a hit. The household members gain extra shelves, and with this, there will be no cosmetics or toiletries scattered over the bathroom countertop. The washbasin with a cabinet will allow you to maintain order and keep it tidy. This solution can be used even in very small interiors. For such interiors, a narrow washbasin with a cabinet is a good choice. This kind of washbasin has another advantage, too: it doesn't have many nooks and crannies, so it is easy to keep it clean.

Owners of spacious bathrooms have plenty of options. A large washbasin may be as long as 120cm. If there are more people living in the house, or a couple shares the bathroom, then a double washbasin with a cabinet may also work well.

Bathroom washbasins – types

Bathroom washbasins can be sorted according to various criteria. Most often they are divided into round and rectangular washbasins. However, this is not the only division. They also differ in material and color. Although ceramic is still the most common choice, some investors decide on something slightly more original. A washbasin made of glass, marble or granite is an interesting sight, and we will also achieve a spectacular result using a washbasins made of wood, but in their case we need to bear in mind the properties of this material, and thus its proper care. Depending on the type of washbasin, its installation looks different. We can choose from inset lavatory and above counter washbasins, pedestal lavatory and free-standing washbasins. Here is a little more information on the most common types of washbasins.

Above counter washbasin

Above counter washbasins are characterized by the fact that the whole washbasin is placed on the vanity cabinet or the countertop. They are usually round in shape, but this is not a rule. A round above counter washbasin is easy to install, is versatile and looks great in any bathroom. In modern interiors, rectangular above counter washbasins will also be suitable. Above counter washbasin is an eye-catching choice, but it also has a certain disadvantage: dirt accumulates in the spot where the washbasin touches the countertop, and since such space is difficult to access, cleaning it may be troublesome.

Under counter washbasin

Under counter washbasins look different. This model is mounted on the bottom side of the countertop, and the ceramics does not protrude. These washbasins are elegant and classic at the same time, and they are easy to clean. We have to remember, however, that the amount of space available in the cabinet will be reduced.

Black washbasin

White washbasin is a true classic. It is the dominant color when it comes to ceramic washbasins. However, it is worth going a little further and opting for something more original. Black washbasins may prove interesting. They will look splendid composed with glamorous, modern and industrial styles. There are also models available in other non-standard colors. Color above counter washbasins are usually made of glass and can be, for example, green or orange.

Stone washbasin

It is a perfect option for those looking for something durable, elegant and original. Natural stone is stylish and will certainly be a real decoration of the bathroom. The most common are washbasins made of granite or marble. Despite its impressive appearance, many people discard this option because of its high price.

Which trap to choose for the above counter washbasin?

The trap's role is to discharge water into the sewage system, as well as to eliminate unpleasant odors and to stop sewer gases. Depending on what piece of sanitary ware the trap is to be connected to, a different variant is chosen. When it comes to washbasins, we can choose from tubular, bottle and non-standard traps. As a rule, the choice depends on the amount of space available. Bottle traps have a vertical design, and a water reservoir is located in their lower part. This option is good for smaller bathrooms. Tubular traps have a horizontal design and look like letter "U". Such traps rarely clog and are very efficient, however, they take up more space and are recommended for larger bathrooms. Finally, there are designer traps, of an unusual shape and intended to be a decoration. This type is good for industrial bathrooms, where an exposed drain is an advantage. The above mentioned traps will work well regardless of the type of washbasin, which means that when looking for a trap for an above counter washbasin, we should primarily look at the functionality and the amount of space we wish to use.

How to mount the washbasin?

No matter if the investor is considering glass above counter washbasins, free-standing washbasins or ceramic under counter washbasins, they must keep in mind their functionality, and thus their installation. Good access to the wash basin is essential. It must be at a proper distance from cabinets, shower unit and walls. The washbasin should be at least 20cm away from each of these elements and placed 75-80cm above the floor. Under counter washbasins are mounted lower than the above counter ones.
