December 2021

In some cases, they result from the architecture of the building, however, more and more often it is the investors who include them in their projects and create them from plasterboard. No surprise here – a bathroom niche has a lot of advantages!

In the past, making use of bathroom niche was a big challenge. Nowadays, there are so many interesting options available that we can say that niches are even desired. On one hand, they allow for practical use of space, and on the other, they serve as an original decoration for the bathroom.

Bathroom niche arrangement – where to start?

Each bathroom niche can look different. Depending on where it is located and what are its dimensions, its arrangement would be approached differently. If it’s a result of the building project and the investor doesn’t have much influence on its width, there is nothing left but to adjust. More often, however, the bathroom niche is created during bathroom renovation. Depending on expectations, it can be used to arrange a shower or additional shelves. We can also use it to mask the pipes or add impressive lighting.

If we are planning to create a niche, we have to keep in mind that the bathroom is supposed to be functional first and foremost. The plasterboards take up some space, so we should think whether and where to place them. The recesses are perfect around the washbasin, bathtub (also the one with a bathtub screen), inside the shower enclosure or over the toilet seat. Stylish recesses are a much better option than metal shelves. A niche will always look good as long as it is tidy.

Recessed shower

A large hidden recess in the bathroom is the perfect place to install a shower. With the recess, we can easily designate a comfortable bathing space. This solution will work even in a small bathroom. With a small area, a large shower unit would take up a lot of space. The recess, on the other hand, will look elegant and we can say it will blend into the background, making the bathroom look larger. However, the recessed shower is not solely for small bathrooms. If it is possible to make a larger recess in a spacious interior, then we can achieve an extremely large bathing area.

Choosing the right door is an important aspect. A recessed shower door should have equally good parameters as a regular shower enclosure. It should be made of durable tempered glass and, preferably, be covered with Aquaperle coating, which prevents unsightly stains from forming on the glass. If we have a larger recess, a good option will be an elegant sliding recess door. Frameless shower door is also an interesting option as it is economical in form, minimalistic and light. It will give the bathroom exclusive appearance.

Shelves in the niche – make the most of your bathroom niche

A bathroom with a niche can provide extra shelf space. It is worth thinking about it when the niche is or will be smaller in size. Then, it will also become a great place to store cosmetics or towels. If the bathroom is spacious, and the household members can’t complain about an insufficient number of storage spaces, then the niche can be used to put decorations there. If the bathroom is located in the attic with sloped ceilings, then probably there is a lot of unused space just where the wall meets the ceiling – it is the perfect place to make small niches for shelves. An amazing effect can be obtained when the shelves in the bathroom arranged in recesses are complete with additional LED lighting.

A larger niche may be the perfect place to put a washing machine if we don’t want to expose it. However, we should make sure we measure the appliance well, because most models are so deep that they are difficult to hide and may protrude from the niche, which doesn’t look particularly good.

Bathroom niche enclosure

Something that cannot be omitted is the way the niche is enclosed. We can go here in two directions: the niche can be enclosed or left open. When the investor wants to treat the niche as a decorative place, then it is better to leave it open. In such case, it is worth considering the previously mentioned decorative lighting. While planning the lighting, we should first think where the source of light would be and lead the wires accordingly, or buy cordless string of lights.

However, if it is to be a vertical niche used, for example, as a cabinet for cleaning products, covering it is worth considering; it also makes an impression that the interior is tidy. Traditional doors can be used for covering, but blinds, instead, will look more interesting. Everything depends on the entire arrangement of the interior.

On the other hand, if the niche is used as a shower unit, then we can tile it any way we want. Smaller recesses in the shower unit instead of shelves also work well, this way there is always a place to put a shampoo or a shower gel.
